Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion is the reduction of airflow inside the nose. The main causes are a deviated septum, cold, nasal turbinate hypertrophy, sinusitis and adenoid hypertrophy among children.

What Are The Results Of Nasal Congestion

Patient with stuffy nose has to breathe through the mouth due to nasal congestion. Breathing through the mouth all the time can lead to problems such as dry mouth, throat irritation, chronic laryngitis which causes throat ache and itchy throat. People who breathe through the mouth at sleep may have chronic fatigue and brain fog. Snoring and apnea could also occur because of nasal congestion. If it’s not treated, it may cause heart problems, lung diseases and throat infection in time.

What Causes Nasal Congestion

There are separate causes for children and for adults.

For children:

– Adenoid hypertrophy
– Foreign body in the nose
– Cold
– Allergy
– Sinusitis
– Septum Deviation

For adults:

– Septum deviation
– Nasal turbinate hypertrophy
– Cold
– Sinusitis
– Allergy
– Tumors inside the nose
– Polips

Treatment For Nasal Congestion

Treatment for nasal congestion is planned according to the underlying condition. If it’s because of septum deviation or nasal turbinate hypertrophy, surgical operation could be needed. If the causes are nasal inflammation or allergy, medication is adequate.

How To Relieve Nasal Congestion

Your present environment shouldn’t be too hot, too cold or too damp. It’s important because breathing through the mouth all the time could cause different problems. We recommend drinking more water because it can encourage mucus to flow out of your nasal passages. Applying the solution to your nose which includes a glass of water, a tea spoon of salt and carbonate could also help.

Nasal Congestion Among Babies

Nasal congestion is more uncomfortable among babies than adults. It can make harder for them to feed. Moreover, it may cause ear infection and lower respiratory tract infection. Using vaporizer at the room, keeping its head up or using lavender oil may be helpful. However, the best solution for babies is using saltwater drops. It’s safe to repeat dropping saltwater into the nostrils as often as you need.
