Tinnitus (Ringing in the Ears)
Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external source. It affects 1 in 5 individuals over the age of 65. It can be temporary or permanent and often occurs in connection with conditions that affect the inner ear.
Sometimes, tinnitus can be audible to others as well. In such cases, the ringing may be heard by people nearby. However, in most instances, only the affected individual hears the sound. In vascular disorders near the neck and ear, a form of tinnitus may occur due to the sound of blood flow through the vessels.
Patients describe tinnitus using a wide variety of sound descriptions. They report hearing buzzing, humming, blowing, or whistling noises. All of these are different manifestations of tinnitus.
CAUSES OF TINNITUS
Tinnitus can result from a wide range of conditions that affect the inner ear. Sometimes, multiple factors may contribute simultaneously. It is more common among people living in industrialized and noisy environments. Elderly individuals are particularly prone to tinnitus. Exposure to loud noise, vitamin deficiencies, high cholesterol, or thyroid-related issues may all cause tinnitus. It can also be triggered by high blood pressure or as a side effect of certain medications. In some cases, tumors near the inner ear may cause tinnitus. Prolonged exposure to loud noise can result in temporary or permanent tinnitus.
TREATMENT OF TINNITUS
Treatment for tinnitus depends on the underlying cause. In some cases, it can be quickly and effectively managed. Metabolic disorders and blood pressure issues are among the treatable causes of tinnitus.
In individuals over 65, nerve degeneration in the high-frequency area of the inner ear may lead to tinnitus. Unfortunately, in such cases, complete elimination of the ringing may not be possible due to the permanent loss of nerve function.
If the tinnitus is caused by medication, it may resolve once the medication is discontinued. Tumors or vascular abnormalities near the inner ear can also lead to tinnitus, and in such situations, surgical treatment may be considered.
