Rhinoplasty in Turkey for UK Patients: What You Need to Know

If you live in the UK and are considering rhinoplasty in Turkey, the surgery itself is only one part of the decision. The bigger questions are usually practical: where you will meet your surgeon, how long you will be away, how you will get home safely, and who will look after you once you are back in Britain. This guide follows the journey of a UK patient from the first enquiry to the final follow-up, so you can plan with a clear picture of every stage.

For details of the procedure itself, including techniques, recovery and results, see our main rhinoplasty in Turkey page. This article focuses on the journey around the operation.

Key points at a glance
  • Dr. Mesut Dogan is based in London, so UK patients can meet him face to face before committing to travel.
  • Surgery takes place at a fully equipped private hospital in Istanbul, usually with one night in hospital.
  • Most patients stay in Istanbul for around a week after surgery, until the external splint has been removed and early healing has been checked.
  • Post-operative follow-up appointments can be carried out in London, without a return trip to Istanbul.
  • Planning time off work, insurance, travel dates and a companion in advance makes the whole process far less stressful.

How the London and Istanbul Approach Works

One of the most common concerns about surgery abroad is meeting the surgeon for the first time on the day of the operation, then flying home with no one nearby to check on your recovery. The NHS advises patients considering cosmetic surgery abroad to meet the surgeon who will operate on them, not a sales representative, and to think carefully about where their aftercare will take place. Dr. Dogan’s model is built around those two points.

Before surgery
London

An in-person consultation where your nose is examined, your goals are discussed and a surgical plan is agreed.

Surgery
Istanbul

Performed by Dr. Dogan at a fully equipped private hospital, followed by around a week of recovery.

After surgery
London

Follow-up appointments as your nose heals over the following months, close to home.

This means the person who assesses you, the person who operates on you and the person who reviews your healing are the same surgeon, and two of those three stages happen close to home.

Your Journey, Step by Step

  1. 1

    First contact and initial questions

Most journeys start with a message. You can share a brief description of what bothers you about your nose, whether you have any breathing problems, and any previous nasal surgery or injury. Clear photographs from the front, both sides and below can help, but a photo review is not a substitute for a clinical examination. At this stage the aim is simply to understand whether a consultation makes sense for you.

  2. 2

    Face-to-face consultation in London

The consultation is where the real planning happens. Dr. Dogan examines the external shape of your nose, the thickness of your skin, the strength of the cartilage and the inside of the nose, including the septum. He will discuss what you would like to change, what is realistically achievable for your anatomy, and whether any functional correction is needed at the same time.

You should leave the consultation understanding what the operation involves, its limitations, the possible risks and what recovery will look like. Take your time afterwards. A decision about surgery should never feel rushed, and there is no obligation to book on the day.

  3. 3

    Choosing dates and booking travel

Once you decide to go ahead, a surgery date is agreed and you plan your travel around it. Most UK patients arrive in Istanbul the day before surgery and stay for around a week afterwards. We explain the reasoning in our guide on how long to stay in Turkey after rhinoplasty.

    • Choose a flexible or changeable return ticket in case your surgeon advises a slightly longer stay.
    • Book accommodation that is quiet and within easy reach of the hospital.
    • Check your passport validity and the latest entry requirements on the GOV.UK foreign travel advice page before you book.
    • If possible, travel with a companion who can help you during the first few days.
  4. 4

    Arrival and pre-operative checks

After you arrive in Istanbul, you will have pre-operative assessments, which usually include blood tests and an anaesthetic review. Dr. Dogan will see you again to confirm the surgical plan and answer any final questions. This is also the time to mention any medication, supplements or health changes since your London consultation.

  5. 5

Surgery day and one night in hospital

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia. Most patients stay in hospital for one night and are discharged the following morning with a nasal splint in place. Where internal support is needed, thin silicone splints are often used instead of traditional dense packing, which allows most patients to breathe through the nose from the first night.

  6. 6

    Recovery days in Istanbul

The first few days are mainly about rest. Swelling and bruising are usually at their most noticeable in the first 48 to 72 hours. You will be asked to keep your head elevated, avoid bending and straining, avoid blowing your nose and take medication as prescribed. This is not the time for sightseeing: the NHS specifically advises against treating the days after surgery as a holiday.

The external splint is typically removed between day five and day seven. This is the first time you will see the new shape of your nose, although it will still be swollen. Dr. Dogan checks early healing before confirming you are ready to fly.

  7. 7

    Flying home

Air travel after surgery needs some preparation, mainly to reduce the risk of blood clots and to protect your nose in busy airports. Our article on flying back to the UK after rhinoplasty covers timing, what to pack in your hand luggage and what to watch for on the day.

  8. 8

    Follow-up appointments in London

Healing after rhinoplasty continues for many months. Swelling at the tip of the nose in particular can take twelve to eighteen months to settle completely. Your follow-up reviews take place in London, so any question about how your nose is healing can be assessed in person by your own surgeon. Read more in our guide to rhinoplasty aftercare in the UK.

Practical Considerations for UK Patients

Time off work

Most patients return to desk-based work within seven to ten days of surgery. Adding travel days and the day before surgery, plan for around two weeks away in total. Jobs involving heavy lifting, physical contact or dusty environments usually need longer.

Insurance

The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) is not valid in Turkey, and standard travel insurance does not normally cover complications from planned surgery. Ask what cover is in place for your treatment and consider specialist medical travel insurance.

Travelling with a companion

Not essential, but it helps. Someone with you can collect prescriptions, manage luggage, keep you company during the first quiet days and help you through the airport on the way home.

Budgeting beyond the fee

Include flights, accommodation, local transport, meals, a companion’s travel and time away from work. Ask exactly what the surgical fee includes, such as hospital stay, anaesthesia, medication and follow-up appointments.

Questions to Ask Before You Commit

Whoever you choose, these questions help you compare surgeons and plans fairly:

  • Will I meet the operating surgeon in person before the day of surgery?
  • How many rhinoplasty procedures do you perform, and can I see before and after photos of your own patients?
  • Which hospital will the operation take place in, and what are its standards?
  • Where will my follow-up appointments happen after I return to the UK?
  • What happens if I have a complication after I get home?
  • What exactly is included in the quoted fee?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to travel to Turkey for my consultation?

No. Dr. Dogan offers in-person consultations in London, so you can meet him, have your nose examined and discuss your surgical plan before deciding whether to travel.

How long will I be in Istanbul in total?

Most UK patients arrive the day before surgery and stay for around a week afterwards, so the whole trip is usually just over a week. Your exact return date depends on how your early healing progresses.

Will I need to go back to Turkey for check-ups?

In most cases, no. Post-operative follow-up appointments can be carried out in London. A return visit to Istanbul is only needed if further treatment is required.

Can I combine my trip with a holiday?

Not straight after surgery. Sun exposure, swimming, alcohol and long days of walking can all interfere with healing. If you want a holiday, plan it before the operation rather than after.

Is rhinoplasty in Turkey suitable for breathing problems as well?

Yes. If a deviated septum or another structural issue affects your breathing, it can often be corrected during the same operation. This is assessed at your consultation.
