CAUSES OF TONSILLITIS
Tonsil swelling is usually caused by an infection, most often due to microorganisms. Common causes include viruses such as the flu, Epstein-Barr virus (mononucleosis), and bacteria like group A streptococcus (strep throat).
SYMPTOMS OF TONSILLITIS
- Swelling in the neck
- Enlarged tonsils
- Sore throat
- High fever
- Difficulty swallowing
- Bad breath
- Fatigue
- Joint pain
TREATMENT OF TONSILLITIS
Treatment depends on whether the infection is viral or bacterial:
- Viral tonsillitis is treated with supportive care: cold/flu medications, mouthwashes, pain relievers, fever reducers, and cough suppressants.
- Bacterial tonsillitis is treated with antibiotics, as prescribed by a doctor.
TONSILLECTOMY (TONSIL SURGERY)
Surgical removal of the tonsils is recommended if:
- The patient experiences tonsillitis 2–3 times a year for 3 years,
- 4–5 times a year for 2 years, or
- 5–6 times within a single year.
Tonsillectomy may also be necessary if the tonsils are severely enlarged, interfere with breathing or swallowing, or if there is suspicion of a tumor.
Tonsil surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually lasts about 30–45 minutes. Most patients are discharged the same day. A special diet is recommended for around 2 weeks following surgery.
