Nasal Congestion

In the simplest terms, nasal congestion is the reduction of airflow through the nose. The most common causes include deviation of the nasal septum (the cartilage in the center of the nose), the common cold, enlarged nasal turbinates, allergies, sinusitis, and in children, enlarged adenoids.

WHAT DOES NASAL CONGESTION LEAD TO?

People with nasal congestion are often forced to breathe through their mouths due to the reduced airflow through the nose. Constant mouth breathing can lead to dryness in the mouth and irritation in the throat, often resulting in chronic laryngitis with symptoms such as a sore throat, throat tickle, and the frequent urge to clear the throat. Poor sleep quality caused by nasal congestion can result in fatigue and difficulty concentrating. If left untreated, nasal congestion can lead to heart and lung diseases, especially when accompanied by snoring and sleep apnea. Over time, persistent mouth breathing can also cause recurrent throat infections.

WHAT CAUSES NASAL CONGESTION?

The causes of nasal congestion differ between children and adults.

In children:

  • Enlarged adenoids
  • Foreign objects inserted into the nose
  • Common cold
  • Allergies
  • Sinus infections
  • Deviated septum

In adults:

  • Deviated septum
  • Swollen nasal turbinates
  • Common cold
  • Sinusitis
  • Allergies
  • Nasal tumors
  • Nasal polyps

TREATMENT OF NASAL CONGESTION

Treatment is based on the underlying cause. For example, if the congestion is due to a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates, surgical intervention may be necessary. In cases of infections or allergic reactions, medications are generally used.

HOW TO RELIEVE NASAL CONGESTION?

The environment should not be too humid, too cold, or too hot. During an illness, breathing is done through the mouth, which can cause further complications. Maintaining a balanced environment is important. Drinking plenty of water is always recommended, as it helps thin the mucus that causes congestion and allows the nose to clear more easily. A useful home remedy involves mixing one teaspoon of salt and baking soda in a glass of warm water and applying it to the nose.

NASAL CONGESTION IN INFANTS

Nasal congestion tends to be more uncomfortable for infants than for adults. It can disrupt feeding and lead to other illnesses such as ear infections and lower respiratory tract infections. To help your baby breathe easier, ensure the room is well-ventilated, slightly elevate their head, and consider using gentle aromatic oils like lavender. However, the most effective and safest treatment for infant nasal congestion is saline solution (nasal saline spray). When used generously and frequently, it provides significant relief. Saline is completely safe and harmless for babies. Using only a small amount out of fear of causing harm will likely not be effective in relieving your baby’s discomfort.
